#221 from Baños to Santa Isabel

Intro

Day 221 dawned, signaling my departure from the lively town of Baños and its thermal waters. A late start, perhaps, but a deep sense of readiness settled over me as I clipped into the pedals, eager to see what the road to Santa Isabel would reveal. This leg felt like another steady rhythm in the much longer journey, a quiet continuation.

Ride Overview

Today’s ride covered 67.54 kilometers with a total elevation gain of 584.35 meters and a significant loss of 1844.38 meters, making for a net descent. The weather was partly cloudy, offering a comfortable warmth without harsh sun. The entire route was paved, tracing a path that often hugged a deep canyon, revealing a river far below. Steep walls, sometimes verdant green with forest, sometimes stark red and gray rock, framed the road for much of the day.

Highlights

My morning began not on the bike, but with a visit to the thermal baths. After the previous evening’s disappointment at Duran, I opted for Rinon, which offered a similar experience. Two hours slipped by in the warm mineral pools, steam sauna, and alternating hot and cold dips, leaving me feeling thoroughly rejuvenated and ready to face the day before packing up my gear.

The route itself was stunning. The road carved its way through a dramatic landscape of deep canyons, with the river a distant silver ribbon below. Towering walls of rock, cloaked in green or striated with red and gray, created a constant, awe-inspiring backdrop. Just as hunger began to truly set in, I spotted a small restaurant and, to my surprise, another touring cyclist. Manuel, from Mexico, was already enjoying his lunch. Manuel flagged me down, and soon I was sharing a meal and stories, a simple, unexpected joy on the road.

Later in the afternoon, with Santa Isabel drawing closer, I pulled over for a small indulgence. An Oreo ice cream cup from the Ice & Grill restaurant was a truly delightful treat, a perfect pause before the final push. Sometimes it’s the small things that truly brighten the path.

Lowlights

After lunch, Manuel and I rode together for about 15 kilometers. It became clear quite quickly that his lighter bike setup and younger legs gave him a significant advantage on the inclines. While it was good company, I found myself working harder to keep pace, a gentle reminder of my own rhythm.

Just 2.5 kilometers after that delicious ice cream, my legs seemed to hit a wall. The last 5 kilometers into Santa Isabel were a gradual uphill, and every pedal stroke felt like a monumental effort. I pulled into the Parada 61- Suite Hotel y Restaurante, expecting it to be out of my budget. To my surprise, when I mentioned my budget, they kindly offered a room for just $10. The room itself, though not large, was modern and spotless, and above the bed, a picture of a bicycle on a beach instantly made me feel at home.

Overnight

I stayed at the Parada 61- Suite Hotel y Restaurante in Santa Isabel. This place mattered because it offered an unexpected comfort. What initially seemed too fancy for my budget became a haven, thanks to their understanding and flexible pricing. The clean, modern room, and especially that serene picture of a bicycle by the sea, settled a quiet peace over me, making a new place feel instantly familiar.

Reflection

Today confirmed the quiet generosity of the road, not just in its epic scenery but in its people and unexpected comforts. Meeting Manuel was a wonderful, unplanned connection, a brief shared journey that enriched the day. It also reinforced the importance of listening to my own body, of finding my own pace, even when riding with others. The day’s subtle gifts, from a shared meal to an affordable, welcoming room, felt like small blessings. I still wonder about that blue square sign with the racing car I saw along the road, a small, unexplained mystery to carry forward.
